New Fish Market for Kiritimati Island: MoU Signed to Support Development and Fisheries

Kiritimati Island community will enjoy a new and modern fish market,.owned and operated by CPPL in full support of the Government Ministries namely Ministry of Line and Phoenix Island Development (MLPID) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR). This plan was today cemented by the signing.of a joint MoU between Secreraty Natario of MLPID, Secretary Riibeta of MFOR and CEO Temarewe of CEO at Parliament, Ambo. The signing was witnessed by their Senior Officers with the exchange of this MoU. The MoU acknowledges the Korean Overseas Fishing Associate (KOFA), CPPL, MPLID and MFOR who provided funding support for this new fish market project.

Empowering Women with Post-Harvest Skills: Seaweed, Tuna Jerky, and Samosa Training for Nei Mom Uprising

The post-harvest training on seaweed products such as ice cream and jam with pawpaw, along with the processes for making tuna jerky and samosa, was conducted by Fisheries Officers for the women's group known as Nei Mom Uprising. This training was considered important as it helps improve their value-adding skills for household needs and business purposes. The one-day training took place on November 30th, 2024, at the RAK Centre in Antebuka. Great appreciation goes to the World Bank through the PROP project for its support of this training.

IUCN Hosts GIS Refresher Workshop to Strengthen Marine Resource Management in Kiribati

The IUCN team recently conducted a workshop and training session for the technical team of the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. This initiative was specifically tailored as a GIS refresher program to address the critical needs GIS technical team within the Ministry. Held over three productive days, from the 2nd to the 6th of this month, the workshop brought together participants from the Geoscience, Oceanic Fisheries, and Coastal Fisheries Divisions. Topics covered included Bioregions, Remote Sensing, Habitat Mapping, Data quality in GIS quality for Kiribati’s Islands best practices and standards for GIS data, GEBCO, Special Unique Marine Areas (SUMA), Allen Coral Atlas, Ocean Zoning, and RTK GNSS GPS training. These sessions provided technical staffs with valuable insights and hands-on experience in various mapping processes to inform decision-making. Beyond enhancing technical expertise, the GIS refresher program aims to promote sustainable marine resource management and advance marine spatial planning efforts in Kiribati.

Kiribati Joins Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Conference to Explore Sustainable Coastal Management

Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing Council (PGRSC) conference is an annual event that brings together GIS and remote sensing professionals to share knowledge, discuss advancements, and foster collaborations for sustainable development. This year's conference, held at the University of the South Pacific's Laucala Campus in Suva from November 25–29, focused on the theme “Sustainable Management for Coastal Areas through Remote Sensing and GIS.
Kiribati participated in the conference through representatives from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), including the Lands Management Division and Marine Division, supported by sponsors such as PGRSC and New Zealand under the Phoenix Island Marine Spatial Planning Project. The program featured presentations showcasing innovative GIS applications, trends, and solutions, alongside opportunities for networking, workshops, and discussions aimed at exploring advancements in geospatial technologies for impactful community change. The event emphasized collaboration and the effective use of GIS to address challenges in coastal area management.
