One of the Senior Fisheries Officer, Mr Manibua Rota from the Coastal Fisheries Division has completed a one-week training programme on the implications of ocean acidification for algae at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. The training aims to build the capacity of participants to conduct biological monitoring of ocean acidification, focusing on key species of interest in each participant’s country.
The officer also attended the one-week Ocean in a High-CO₂ World VI symposium, where they showcased ocean acidification activities undertaken in Kiribati. The symposium provided an opportunity to establish partnerships and explore potential collaborations with national and international stakeholders working on ocean acidification.
In addition, the officer participated in a one-day school outreach programme to promote awareness of ocean acidification.
The two-week programme is conducted in partnership with the Pacific Islands Ocean Acidification Centre, the University of Otago, Solomon Islands National University, the National University of Samoa, the University of the South Pacific, and The Ocean Foundation.
