3 staff from the Coastal Fisheries Division (CFD) successfully completed a three-week field visit to Tabiteuea North, from 13 August to 3 September 2026, carrying out three key activities.

🦈 1. Community Visit  from Tekabuibui to Aiwa – Fisheries Regulations 2019 Awareness Program.

The team conducted maneaba consultations on the Fisheries Regulations 2019 and gathered community views to support preparations for the possible reopening of shark fishing and export in 2027, with a strong focus on sustainable fisheries and shark management and conservation.

🐟 2. Tanuea PROP CS Follow-Up

The team met with the Chairman, committee, and members of Tanuea PROP CS to review the society’s progress and provide post-harvest training on products such as tuna sausages, tuna jerky, and seaweed ice cream and jam. A member survey was also conducted to collect important information on the society.

🏫 3. School Fisheries Awareness

The team visited 8 primary schools across Tabiteuea North to promote fisheries sustainability and awareness among students. A drama competition was held on 1 September, with:

🥇 1st – Takoronga Primary School, Terikiai – $200

🥈 2nd – Taunibong Primary School – $150 

🥉 3rd – Auriaria & Temwamwang Primary Schools – $50 each

The team returned to Tarawa on 3 September with appreciation to the Tabiteuea North Island Council, IEC, teachers, students, and Tanuea PROP CS members for their support and participation.
