Safeguarding Kiribati’s Seafood Quality and Export Standards

To safeguard the safety and quality of seafood products exported from Kiribati, including Kiritimati Island, the Seafood Verification Division (SVD) continues to implement official controls across both onshore and offshore establishments. During a one-week mission to Kiritimati Island from 22 September to 1 October 2026, two SVD officers, conducted inspections to existing processing plants including offshore freezer vessels.

Although the visit was brief, a wide range of important verification and compliance activities were successfully completed. These efforts help ensure that Kiribati's exported seafood products continue to meet international food safety standards and remain safe for human consumption. Through the SVD’s official control programme, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR) protects consumers, supports the fisheries industry, and contributes to national economic growth by maintaining access to lucrative markets.

The team also extends its sincere appreciation to companies involved and to the administration staff of the MFOR for their continued support and cooperation, which contributed significantly to the successful completion of this mission. Their commitment and assistance were instrumental in enabling the inspection activities and the achievement of the mission objectives.
