From 27 September to 11 October 2026, the Coastal Fisheries Division, through its Training Unit, conducted community engagement activities in Abaiang under the Tobwaan Waara Project. The activities were led by Tirae and Aritika, focusing on shark consultations, follow-up visits with the Tuarabu community’s -Tobwaan Tenanai Boboti, and shark awareness across the island.
The visit aimed to strengthen community skills and knowledge in developing tuna and ark shell products for business opportunities, while improving understanding of shark regulations and promoting responsible management and sustainable use of our marine resources.
These activities provided an opportunity to work closely with local communities, strengthen existing knowledge, support local business development, and encourage responsible fishing practices for the benefit of present and future generations.
The team extends its sincere appreciation to the Abaiang Island Council, community leaders, and the people of Abaiang for their warm support, cooperation, and active participation throughout the visit.
Special thanks go to the Tobwaan Waara Project and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR) for their continued support in making these important community activities possible.
Together, we can empower our communities, create sustainable livelihood opportunities, and protect Kiribati’s marine resources for generations to come.
