Two officers from the Training and Information Unit, Mr. Teiooki.B and Mrs. Lina.I have just returned from Arorae, where they successfully conducted a school fisheries awareness drama competition for primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) students yesterday. The team arrived on 21 October and is scheduled to return on 28 October.
The activity aimed to raise students’ awareness of the importance of coastal fisheries resources, sustainable fisheries management, the harmful effects of destructive fishing practices, and ocean acidification. It also encouraged students to adopt responsible behaviours and share their knowledge with their families and communities.
The competition featured the following themes:
· Primary (Tiona Pri): No to Destructive Fishing Gears
· JSS (Takoto Jss): Our Ocean, Our Future: Understanding Ocean Acidification and Protecting Marine Life
The winners were announced following the competition. Year 1 and Year 2 won in the primary category, while the Red Team secured first prize in the JSS category.
The Training and Information Unit sincerely thanks the Mayor, Island Education Committee (IEC), teachers, students, parents, and the Tobwaan Waara Project for their valuable support, particularly the project’s financial assistance, which contributed significantly to the success of this activity.
