On Friday, 31 July 2026, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR) officially launched its Wave of Digital Innovation event at Bairiki Square, presided over by the Honourable Minister Ribanataake Tiwau. This milestone marks a significant step forward in MFOR’s digital transformation agenda, with the rollout of ten online integrated systems designed to enhance information management, achieve efficiency and streamlined service delivery, operational transparency, and evidence-based policymaking across the Kiribati’s fisheries sector.
In his opening address, the Honourable Minister Tiwau underscored the importance of efficiency and accountability at MFOR using new tech, reminding all participants from other Ministries, of the shared responsibility that comes with public service to achieve our common goals.
The 10 online systems of MFOR that were launched include, 1. MFOR Human Resource Information System, 2. Laboratory Database System, 3. Coastal Fisheries e-License System, 4. Coastal Fisheries Socio-economic Dashboard, 5. Seafood Verification e-licensing System, 6. Seafood Verification System, 7. ShinyPlanR Tool for Mapping 8. MFOR Digital Asset Register System, 9. MFOR Revenue Dashboard System and 10. MFOR Staff Travel Tracking Dashboard.
Live demonstrations and interactive Q&A were conducted on the practical application of these tools, showcasing how they will drive greater efficiency, responsiveness, and data-driven decision-making across the Ministry’s operations.
The event also celebrated local innovation and enterprise, with awards presented under the Value-Add Products Initiative to recognize the creativity and entrepreneurship of Kiribati women. Exhibits of locally made marine-resource products, including solar salt from Beru, highlighted how community-led initiatives can generate tangible economic opportunities and bolster livelihoods.
In a further demonstration of operational support, MFOR officially received a fleet of motorbikes funded through the PROP, aimed at strengthening field operations and service delivery throughout the outer-islands of Kiribati.
