Kiribati was one of six Pacific nations that participated in the 2026 Mariculture Training Program for Pacific Island Countries, held in Xiamen, China, from August 22 to September 13, 2026. The comprehensive program combined classroom lectures with site visits to local marine farms and research laboratories. 

During the lectures, participants explored key aquaculture topics, including shrimp farming, recirculating eel systems, oyster hatchery techniques, ornamental species cultivation, and mud crab breeding. Field visits allowed participants to observe these practices in action, providing valuable practical context for their work. 

The training offered actionable insights to advance aquaculture in Kiribati. By adopting these innovative techniques, local practitioners can boost productivity and sustainability—ultimately strengthening food security, opening economic opportunities, and promoting the responsible management of marine resources. 

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR) expressed its sincere gratitude to the China-Pacific Island Countries Poverty Alleviation and Cooperative Development Centre, the Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, the Fujian Provincial Department of Ocean and Fisheries, Jimei University, and Fujian Ocean Vocational School for nominating Kiribati and sponsoring, hosting, and organizing this impactful training program.
