From 6 to 20 September 2026, 2 staff from the Coastal fisheries division, through the Training unit, conducted an awareness and consultation visit to Abemama under Tobwaan Waara Project.

The visit focused on strengthening community awareness and understanding of fisheries and shark regulations, as well as promoting responsible management and use of our marine resources.

During the visit, the team engaged with primary schools and communities across Abemama and Abatiku, providing awareness on fisheries matters and shark regulations and encouraging community participation in protecting our valuable marine resources.

The visit provided an opportunity to work closely with local communities, share important fisheries information, and strengthen understanding of regulations that support the sustainable management of Kiribati’s fisheries.

The team returned to Tarawa on 20 September with appreciation to the Abemama Island Council, IEC, teachers, and students for their support and participation.
