Teriaki Canoe Paddling Tournament 2025 Opens with Cultural Pride and Strong Competition

The Hon Minister Harry Tekaiti officially opened the Teriaki Canoe Paddling Tournament for 2025, on the Saturday, 15th November 2025 at the lagoon side of Betio beach. In his opening remarks, Hon Minister Harry highlighted that Teriaki Canoe Paddling Tournament is not just about racing, it is an opportunity to celebrate the values of our culture, the richness of resources from the sea and how we connect with each other through the ocean. During this year’s tournament, more than 15 teams from Government Ministries, State Owned Enterprises, Diplomatic Missions and other Organizations were registered and compete in the male, female and mixed category during this one-day tournament. This year’s tournament is the third successful event and has attracted more teams, audience and interests when compared with previous tournaments held in 2023 and 2024. It was a day full of fun, joy and camaraderie shared amongst the teams and their families. This year’s Teriaki 2025 winners and champions were MFOR for men category, MTCIC for female category and the Australian High Commission for the mixed category. The MFOR as the host for Teriaki Tournament, acknowledged the participation teams, organizing committee members and the donors, EU and MFAT and DFAT for their support and collective contributions to making this year’s Teriaki tournament another great success and memorable one.

RAK and Itoiningaina Women Gain Skills in Tuna Jerky, Sausage, and Smoked Products

A two-day practical training session from November 11 to 12 at the Antebuaka Boardroom. The training gathered 60 women participants from RAK and Itoiningaina, focusing on building useful skills in preparing and processing tuna jerky , smoked tuna, tuna samosa’s and tuna sausages.
The sessions offered hands-on experience in all aspects of product development—from selecting quality tuna and preparing ingredients to marinating, drying, mixing, cooking, packaging, and storing. Emphasis was placed on maintaining high standards of hygiene, food safety, and quality control to ensure the products meet both household and market requirements.
Along with technical skills, participants gained advice on marketing, pricing, recordkeeping, and small-scale entrepreneurship, enabling them to turn their new knowledge into practical business opportunities.
The program concluded with a product display and tasting session, where participants proudly showcased their tuna jerky and sausage.
The Ministry is grateful for the funding support provided by the FAO through the Sustainable Value Chain for Small Island Developing States project (SVC4SIDs) in ensuring the success of this program.

Over 10,000 Milkfish Fries Released to Revitalize Tarawa Lagoon Fisheries

Wednesday, 12 November, 2025 - more than 10,000 milkfish fries were released back to the wild, Tarawa lagoon today by Officer in Charge DS Teue, Director CFD, Tooreka Teemari, Mr Henry representing Zhejiang Ocean family and Mr Davey representing Shanghai Deep Sea Fisheries. These milkfish fries were spawned in the Ambo Fisheries hatchery and farmed in the open lagoon for several months. The initiative is a way to restock and boost the population of milkfish in the lagoon for improved domestic fisheries and livelihood for the people of Tarawa. The Government of Kiribati is indebted to Mr Shen, President of Zhejiang Ocean Family, China and their team for the investment in this fish farm enabled through the Joint Venture Kiritimati Island Fisheries Limited (KIFL) The Government of Kiribati also appreciate the effort of Shanghai Kaichuang Deep Sea Fisheries Co.,Ltd in their venture to contribute to this sea ranching program and we sincerely thanks Mr Wang Haifeng, the President of the Shanghai Fisheries Group and his team for this important initiative. The Ministry also appreciates Mr. Du, the Managing Director for GOKL and KFL, for his continued support rendered through making this program a success in Kiribati.

Strengthening Ocean Governance: KMSPCC Leads Stakeholder Engagement in the Line Islands

From 3–10 November 2025, a 10-member team from the Kiribati Marine Spatial Planning Coordinating Committee (KMSPCC), led by the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), visited Kiritimati Island under the CAB-SMART Phoenix Islands Marine Spatial Planning Project, proudly supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).
The mission aimed to conduct stakeholder and community consultations on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and facilitate a stakeholder review of the draft National Ocean Policy
A successful workshop on 4 November brought together Government agencies, SOEs, NGOs, and private sector operators to discuss the MSP process, governance, and shared ocean use. From 5–7 November, the team visited London, Tabwakea, Banana, and Poland Villages, engaging communities through participatory mapping and discussions on sustainable ocean management, livelihoods, and cultural values.
On 10 November, stakeholders reconvened to review and align the draft National Ocean Policy with emerging MSP frameworks across Kiribati.
MFOR sincerely acknowledges the collaboration, technical input, and strong commitment shown by all partners throughout the mission.
