Kiribati Joins High-Level Pacific Tuna Export Mission to New Zealand

The Honourable Minister Ribanataake Tiwau, accompanied by his official Senior Assistant Secretary Teeta Erikate; joined the High-Level Export Enhancement mission, which comprises of Fisheries Ministers from Fiji, PNG and Solomon Is, and took place in New Zealand from the 22 to 28 July 2025. This high-level mission was hosted by the Honourable Minister Shane Jones, New Zealand Minister for Oceans and Fisheries; and was premised on exploring new collaborative and enhancement opportunities surrounding the tuna value and supply chains, traceability, value-adding initiatives and marketing a premium Pacific Tuna Brand. The Government of Kiribati, through the MFOR acknowledged the Government of New Zealand through MFAT and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for the warm hospitality and informative mission accorded to Fisheries Ministers. This learning mission was one of the HMFOR 100 Days priorities which was successfully concluded on the 26 June 2025.

Bringing E-Licensing to the Line Islands: Tobwaan te Mari Outreach Mission Completed

In June this year, four officers from the Ministry of Fisheries, through the Monitoring Control Surveillance and Enforcement Unit (MCS&E), recently conducted a successful outreach mission to socialize the new Coastal E-Licensing System (Tobwaan te Mari) to Petfish Operators and interested applicants across the Line Islands. What’s more, the team carried out consultations on the 2024 Sea Cucumber Regulations with communities on the islands visited. After the initial activities in Kiritimati Island, the team split into two groups to cover Tabuaeran and Teraina, continuing the same awareness and consultation efforts.
After these activities, registration of Petfish Operators and interested applicants into the Tobwaan te Mari system was successfully carried out. At every location, the team first engaged with the Full Council Meeting before holding sessions with operators and community members. A big “Ko rabwa” to all island councils and communities for the warm welcome and active participation! This trip was made possible with funding support from PROP.

FFA Members Unite on Albacore Management Ahead of WCPFC22

The 9th South Pacific Albacore workshop (SPA9) came to a conclusion on Friday, 27th June 2025, after five days of discussion and deliberation among FFA members present at the workshop.
The workshop objectives are to consider a revised a management procedure to manage the South Pacific Albacore fishery sustainably, continue the discussion on allocation proposals to advance the work on the SPA conservation and management measures and solidify their unified position for this fishery before the Western Central Pacific Fisheries Commission annual meeting this year (WCPFC22).
SPA9 is attended by three officials from the Oceanic Fisheries Division to keep pace with the ongoing discussion on the development of the management procedure for this fishery, and more importantly, national interest is accommodated during the discussion. This is a crucial workshop for members dependent on this fishery, including those who are developing their albacore fishery, like Kiribati.

MFOR Engages with HLPG on Regional Architecture Reform

The MFOR team comprised of Secretary Riibeta Abeta and Deputy Secretary Teue Baikarawa met with members of the High-level Persons Group (HLPG), Sir Dr Jimme Rodgers and Peseta Noumea Simi to discuss views and perspectives regarding the work of the Review of the Regional Architecture. Several areas were exchanged including existing regional arrangements on the fisheries sector, governance structures for better regional integration, accountability and service delivery to the member countries, and many more. These feedbacks from Kiribati and all other Pacific Island Countries, will be compiled and reported back to the Leaders for their further decision, during their upcoming 54th Pacific Islands Forum to be held in Honiara, September 2025. The MFOR team conveyed appreciation to the members of the HLPG for the opportunity to share views and contribute to this important piece of reform work to the regional architecture.
