Kiribati Officers Join PNA Workshops on FSMA Review and Economic Data in Majuro

Two workshops (FSMA Review & Economic Data) concluded during the week of 4-8 August 2025 at PNAO headquarters in Majuro. The FSMA workshop is a continuousa review of the current eligibility criteria under the scheme. This is a fundamental work to update existing requirements under the arrangement and in laying the foundation to support new initiatives that are directed toward greater benefits and tuna domestication in the region. The Economic Data workshop complements the FSMA workshop by focusing on the approach to undertake in achieving more benefits and promoting domestic tuna industry development through refining economic indicators and comparative advantages among Parties. The workshops are important for the development of Kiribati tuna fisheries and are very much in line with the Government's KV20 outlook. Two officers from the Oceanic Fisheries Division of the MFOR attended the workshop, and acknowledgment to PNAO for the funding support.

Boosting Aquaculture Efficiency with Japanese-Supported Autoclave Training

From August 5 to 6, 2025, a comprehensive autoclave installation and operational training was conducted at the Tanaea Hatchery. The session was led by a technical engineer from MediFix, Fiji, and attended by aquaculture staff, Dr. Satoshi Ohashi of the Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation (OFCF), and two representatives from the Seafood Toxicology Laboratory Division. The training focused on the proper installation, safe operation, routine maintenance, and sterilization protocols essential for ensuring and enhancing the efficiency of hatchery and laboratory procedures. This capacity-building activity was made possible through the generous support of the Japanese Government.

Nanikaai Leads the Way in Ocean Protection with CBFM Enforcement Training

From July 29–31, the Community-Based Fisheries Management (CBFM) Team, in collaboration with the Monitoring, Control, Surveillance & Enforcement (MCS&E) Unit of the Coastal Fisheries Division under the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), successfully delivered a Refresher Training on Basic Enforcement Skills to the Nanikaai community.
The 3-day training brought together 30 passionate participants, including community enforcement officers, youth leaders, and women’s groups from various churches. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ capacity in enforcing community bylaws, monitoring illegal fishing activities, resolving conflicts, and enhancing collaboration to protect Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
This training highlights the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to empower communities as key partners in sustainable fisheries management and ocean conservation.

Sustainable Seas: MFOR Brings Fisheries Education to Butaritari Communities

The Coastal Fisheries Division's Training and Information Unit (MFOR) successfully concluded an impactful outreach mission to Butaritari from July 23-30, 2025. Four dedicated staff members delivered comprehensive Train of Trainer sessions, equipping local educators with essential knowledge and practical tools for teaching marine science and fisheries management in schools.
The mission extended beyond formal education through targeted community awareness programs, engaging fishers, vendors, and students in meaningful discussions about sustainable marine resource management. These initiatives emphasized the critical importance of responsible fishing practices for both Butaritari's local communities and Kiribati's broader marine ecosystem.
The overwhelmingly positive response from participants demonstrated the community's commitment to marine conservation. Teachers showed enthusiasm for integrating these vital topics into their curricula, while fishers and vendors expressed genuine interest in adopting sustainable practices. Students actively participated in discussions, showing promising signs for the next generation of ocean stewards.
This successful mission represents a significant step forward in building local capacity for marine resource management and fostering community-wide commitment to sustainable fisheries practices across Kiribati.
