Sustainable Seas: MFOR Brings Fisheries Education to Butaritari Communities
The Coastal Fisheries Division's Training and Information Unit (MFOR) successfully concluded an impactful outreach mission to Butaritari from July 23-30, 2025. Four dedicated staff members delivered comprehensive Train of Trainer sessions, equipping local educators with essential knowledge and practical tools for teaching marine science and fisheries management in schools.
The mission extended beyond formal education through targeted community awareness programs, engaging fishers, vendors, and students in meaningful discussions about sustainable marine resource management. These initiatives emphasized the critical importance of responsible fishing practices for both Butaritari's local communities and Kiribati's broader marine ecosystem.
The overwhelmingly positive response from participants demonstrated the community's commitment to marine conservation. Teachers showed enthusiasm for integrating these vital topics into their curricula, while fishers and vendors expressed genuine interest in adopting sustainable practices. Students actively participated in discussions, showing promising signs for the next generation of ocean stewards.
This successful mission represents a significant step forward in building local capacity for marine resource management and fostering community-wide commitment to sustainable fisheries practices across Kiribati.
