Kiribati and Korea Strengthen Ties Through New Fisheries and Infrastructure Projects

The journey of a mutual collaboration between the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), Republic of Kiribati begins today, 22nd October 2025, with the arrival of Dr Eom Myung-Chul, the Resident Representative of MOF ODA Office in Tarawa, Kiribati. Dr EoM will establish their MOF ODA Office in Kiribati to supervise and oversee the implementation of two infrastructure projects namely, the Bairiki Wharf upgrading project and the establishment of a new Fisheries Training Centre project in Tanaea. The Republic of Korea through their ODA program will provide funding and engineering assistance while the Republic of Kiribati will provide office space and facilitate all permitting requirements to ensure these two critical projects run smoothly. These two projects will provide more employment, improved services for fishermen and island ferries and generate more opportunities for the local economy in Kiribati. The Government of Kiribati, through the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources acknowledges the people and Government of the Republic of Korea for their generous assistance to Kiribati, through these cooperation projects.

KMSPCC Conducts Third Island Consultation on Marine Spatial Planning in Onotoa

"Following successful missions to Abaiang and Tamana, the Kiribati Marine Spatial Planning Coordinating Committee (KMSPCC) team conducted its third island visit to Onotoa, from 14 to 21 of October. The Committee comprises officials from the Attorney General’s office, Tourism Authority of Kiribati, Environment and Conservation Division, Culture and Museum Division, and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. During the mission, the team held full council meetings, school visits, and village consultations across Onotoa island to introduce marine spatial planning and hear directly from local communities on how they wish to use and protect their marine space, including key fishing grounds, cultural sites and conservation zones. The team gratefully acknowledged the support of the Onotoa Mayor, the MFOR Administration, Committee members and the World Bank through the PROP project in making this mission a success."

Kiribati Participates in ENBi Strategy Workshop to Strengthen Regional Tuna Collaboration

The two senior officials from the Ministry of Fisheries & Ocean Resources(MFOR) participated in the East New Britain Initiative (ENBi) Implementation Strategy Workshop, demonstrating Kiribati’s strong commitment to advancing regional collaboration and equitable participation in the tuna value chain.
At the margins of the 9th Pacific Tuna Forum (PTF 2025), Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) Members convened on 13 October 2025 at the Sofitel Fiji Resort in Denarau, Nadi, for the 6th ENBi Working Group Meeting. The meeting provided a platform for members to discuss progress and strategic approaches to enhance Pacific Island engagement and value creation in the tuna industry.
Following the PTF, the ENBi Implementation Strategy Workshop was held on 16 October 2025, focused on formulating a regional implementation framework to guide future actions and investments under the initiative.

Kiribati Engages in Key Discussions on Tuna Sustainability at PTF 2025

The 9th Pacific Tuna Forum (PTF 2025) was held from 14–15 October 2025 at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, Nadi, Fiji, under the transformative theme “Pacific Tuna 2050: Resilience, Innovation, Equity, and Sustainable Trade for a Prosperous Future.”
Jointly organized by Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, Papua New Guinea’s National Fisheries Authority (NFA), and INFOFISH, in collaboration with key regional fisheries organizations and stakeholders, the forum brought together policymakers, regulatory officials, industry leaders, development partners, academics, and community representatives from across the Pacific and beyond to discuss the future of the region’s tuna industry.
Kiribati was represented by two officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources (MFOR), who participated in the forum discussions and engagements. Their participation reflected Kiribati’s continued commitment to regional cooperation, sustainable tuna management, and promoting equitable growth across the Pacific fisheries sector.
