Tarawa Shipyard Poised for Growth: Government and Investors Collaborate

The Government of Kiribati, through MFOR are discussing the future development plans of the Tarawa Shipyard Company, an independent company owned by Silla – Korean fishing company and another Philippine based company specialized in shipyard operations. The team from MFOR led by Secretary Riibeta Abeta met Daniel Lee, a representative from Silla and a representative from Tarawa Shipyard and exchanged business plans and ideas for this company. Currently, there is no fully functional shipyard/slipway services in Kiribati, except this company, therefore there is high potential of the Tarawa Shipyard company in the future to provide critical repair and maintenance services to fishing vessels and domestic ferries and boats in Kiribati. The MFOR acknowledged Silla for the continuing interest in this sector.

Safeguarding Our Seas: Kiribati Officers Benefit from FFA MCS Training

Two Officers from the Oceanic Fisheries Division, Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, together with Officers from the Maritime Unit of the Kiribati Police Service benefited from the Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) Data Analysis Training that was organized by FFA in Brisbane, Australia from the 28 – 31 Jan 2025. This training is crucial for the work of the Ministry to ensure that we properly safeguard our ocean resources from illegal fishing and other crime related activities in the ocean. The MFOR acknowledged the FFA for the financial assistance and organization of this important capacity building for Kiribati and other Pacific Island Countries.

Tuvalu-Kiribati Exchange: Strengthening Marine Resource Management

Secretary Riibeta Abeta and his team met Mr Lealai Max from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Tuvalu. Mr Lealai will be spending 3 weeks in Tarawa, Kiribati on attachment training with the Aquaculture team, Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. The specific objective of his attachment is to learn the aquaculture set up and techniques of spawning and rearing the giant clam species including algae culture and grow out farming methods. This activity was designed to promote South-South Cooperation and Learning between the Pacific Island Countries (PICs). Kiribati is privileged to host this program with colleagues from Tuvalu and hope to have more programs in the future for our team to also learn from Tuvalu and other Pacific Island Countries on other areas. The MFOR acknowledged the UN FAO and Government of Tuvalu for sponsoring and initiating this excellent initiative.

Kiribati Fisheries Joins Pacific Fusion Center Training for the First Time

This is the first time Kiribati Fisheries attended the training at the Pacific Fusion Center in Port Villa, Vanuatu from 20/01/2025 to 30/04/2025. The Pacific Fusion delivers training and strategic analysis against security priorities identified by Pacific Island Forum Leaders in the 2018 Boe Declaration on Regional Security. This supports strengthening the strategic assessments for better decision-making addressing national security impacts on regional security: Human Security, Environmental and Resource Security, Climate Change Security and Cybersecurity. The PFC training/secondment program can play a crucial role in enhancing Kiribati's ability to manage its fisheries sustainably and secure its marine resources. This will not only ensure the long-term viability of its fisheries resources but also contribute to economic stability, food security, and sustainable development. By building capacity in areas like border security, intelligence-sharing, disaster response, and fisheries management, the program can help Kiribati navigate both local and global challenges effectively.
